encounter.<br \/><br \/>Drawing on Leonard Andaya and Anthony Milner, he challenged genealogical and state-imposed definitions of Malayness. Beyond ancestry or DNA, the lecture turned to self-identification, language, culture, memory, and the ways communities have understood themselves across generations.<br \/><br \/>Melayu, in this reading, radiates through five concentric circles\u2014from the archipelagic core to maritime worlds extending towards Madagascar and Taiwan. These are not rigid borders, but fields of connection, revealing a civilizational identity shaped through mobility, localisation, exchange, and interaction.<br \/><br \/>Modern political boundaries may divide territories, yet they cannot fully contain older continuities of consciousness.
