English Proficiency Test (EPT) for Public

The EPT is used to assess English language proficiency for academic placement and programme exemption. Candidates who meet the minimum band are exempted from English-language requirements at IIUM.

Q&A

The English Proficiency Test, or EPT, is the official English proficiency assessment from CELPAD, IIUM.

It determines whether a candidate needs to take English-language courses (placement) or is exempted from them depending on their band.

As a placement test for newly admitted students.

As a proficiency test for public candidates (if applicable, per IfLA’s policy).

New students entering English-medium programmes at IIUM who have not provided external English tests (e.g. TOEFL/IELTS).

Information

Paper 1 – Reading

Comprises 3 passages, total of 40 questions including True/False, MCQs, diagram-completion, main idea/supporting detail identification.

Paper 2 – Writing

Two writing tasks:
1) Data/graph/chart description (≈150 words)
2) Essay writing (≈250 words).

Note: This is the standard structure. Details (duration, scoring rubric) will be provided in the downloadable guidelines.

According to CELPAD’s EPT guidelines:

Students or candidates who reach the required band (depending on their programme) will be exempted from the English-language courses.

Candidates below the required band will be placed in appropriate English-language classes (various levels: e.g. LEEF0744, LEEF0754, LEEF0764 depending on their placement result).

Important Notes & Policies

  • EPT is one of the accepted proofs of English proficiency (alternatives: TOEFL, IELTS, MUET) for admission / course requirements.
  • For postgraduate admissions: achieving the required EPT band may be necessary, unless exempted (e.g. if the candidate’s previous degree was taught in English, or other valid criteria met).
  • Exemption from EPT may be granted for graduates from recognised English-speaking countries or if they hold valid external English proficiency certificates, subject to verification.

Complete payment (if applicable for public session).

Receive confirmation and exam slip via email (or portal).

Attend examination on the scheduled date and location as communicated.
