INOCEM was established in 2003 with the objective to support and promote high quality research, training and outreach in oceanography, marine and maritime studies and related management programs through postgraduate education, education, research and effective programs that address marine issues in Malaysia. INOCEM is expected to become a center of excellence in IIUM specializing in research, development and commercialization of ocean and coastal resources with particularly emphasis in marine biotechnology and oceanography.

INOCEM has emerged as a leading institution dedicated to excellence in education, research, and knowledge dissemination across a wide range of marine and environmental subjects, both regionally and internationally. The institute provides a vibrant learning environment that fosters scholarly achievements and the development of expertise in sustainability.

The establishment of INOCEM contributes significantly to the training of experts well-versed in sustainability, addressing the need for comprehensive management and application of science towards sustainable development. Research collaboration and joint program facilitation are key aspects of INOCEM’s approach.

In addition to its research initiatives, INOCEM actively engages with the local community. Activities such as English camps and beach plogging are conducted to educate the community about the importance of sustainable marine resources. INOCEM also supports two local schools and collaborates with the community to facilitate knowledge transfer and promote environmental awareness.

We are located at Cherok Paloh & Multidisciplinary Building at Kulliyah of Science  

Located by the seashore of Cherok Paloh, INOCEM has equipment for research in oceanography and marine organisms. High technology equipment including DJI Inspire II drone is available to assist in the study of island habitat and the monitoring of coastal area. The station imparts a great deal in underwater studies by supplying Scuba diving gear, underwater camera, boat and specialist (Dive Master). The services offered by INOCEM are scuba diving, benthos sample analysis, aquaculture training, plankton sample analysis, boat rental, field sampling services and oceanography training
