Reading Melayu in Leonard Andaya and Anthony Milner: The Dynamics of Consciousness by Prof. Ahmad Murad Merican

17 September 2027 — Prof. Dr. Ahmad Murad Merican, in his lecture “Reading Melayu in Andaya and Milner: The Dynamics of Consciousness,” invited us to reconsider the Melayu (Malays) not as a fixed category, but as a consciousness unfolding across time, space, and encounter.

Drawing on Leonard Andaya and Anthony Milner, he challenged genealogical and state-imposed definitions of Malayness. Beyond ancestry or DNA, the lecture turned to self-identification, language, culture, memory, and the ways communities have understood themselves across generations.

Melayu, in this reading, radiates through five concentric circles—from the archipelagic core to maritime worlds extending towards Madagascar and Taiwan. These are not rigid borders, but fields of connection, revealing a civilizational identity shaped through mobility, localisation, exchange, and interaction.

Modern political boundaries may divide territories, yet they cannot fully contain older continuities of consciousness. The deeper question is not simply who qualifies as Malay, but how “Malayness” has been lived, negotiated, and renewed.

To understand Melayu is not merely to trace an origin, but to encounter a civilisation continually becoming—carried across seas, reshaped across shores, yet conscious of a shared horizon.
