MASTER OF ARTS IN ISLAMIC THOUGHT AND CIVILISATION

PROGRAMME OVERVIEW

The aim of the Master of Arts in Islamic Thought and Civilisation programme is to produce graduates with scientific, comprehensive and integrated knowledge, skills and attitudes suited to becoming researchers, teachers, and practitioners in Islamic Thought and Civilisational studies within both local and international contexts.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

  • Good bachelor degree or equivalent professional qualification; or
  • Obtained a CGPA of 2.7 and above in a related field; and
  • Proficient in English Language (IELTS 6.0 or TOEFL 570) or the IIUM administered English Placement Test (EPT).

    Prospective students without sufficient academic background in their chosen field of study may be required to audit or complete prerequisite courses relevant to their thesis research, as determined by the selection committee

COURSES

Research Methods
IITC 6001
This course introduces students to the science and art of research in the social sciences and humanities. It examines the nature and limits of research from Western and Islamic perspectives. The course will focus on various aspects of research: methods of research, stating a problem, literature review, framework for analysis, methods of data collection, locating materials, textual criticism, proposal writing, and referencing/documentation.
Islamisation of Human Knowledge
IITC 6039
This course deals with one of the most important missions of IIUM as enshrined in its constitution. The raison d’être, philosophy, vision and mission of the university will be discussed. The course shows how the IIUM mission is part of the global Muslim intellectual discourse of reformism (tajdid and islah), aimed at civilisational transformation and intellectual renewal. It highlights the paradigm of Tawhid, the concept of knowledge (‘Ilm), and the integrated personality of Ulul al-Albab, while examining contributions of scholars such as Imam al-Ghazali and contemporary discourse on Islamisation of knowledge.
Islam in Malay History and Culture
IITC 6007
This course is intended to bring about the understanding of the Malay world as part of the Muslim world at large. It examines the advent and spread of Islam in the region and its impact on socio-economic, political, and educational institutions. The course explores the development of Islamic thought in the Malay world and highlights the contributions of reformist movements and key intellectual figures.
