BANANA CIRCLE

WHAT IS BANANA CIRCLE?

A Banana Circle is a sustainable farming technique that combines banana plants, compost, greywater, and companion crops in a circular layout that optimizes nutrient cycling, water retention, and space use.

BASIC CONCEPT

A circular pit, approximately 1 meter wide and 1 meter deep, is dug at the center and filled with organic materials such as kitchen scraps, dried leaves, and compost. Banana plants are planted in a ring around the pit, alongside other beneficial crops such as:

Long beans - natural nitrogen fixer
Taro, galangal or tumeric - utilize underground soil layers
Pandan or lemongrass - repels insects

FUNCTION OF THE CENTRAL PIT

  • Collects rainwater and optionally greywater (mild wastewater from handwashing or kitchen rinsing, free from harmful chemicals)
  • Facilitates decomposition of organic matter into natural fertilize
  • Helps retain moisture, especially during dry seasons

⚠️ Note: Only use biodegradable greywater without strong detergents or grease.

BENEFITS

  • Reduces waste of water and organic material
  • Increases plant productivity without chemical fertilizers
  • Suitable for small home gardens, village plots, and eco-farms
  • Attracts pollinators and beneficial insects naturally
