The Malaysia-OceanX Scientific Expedition 2024, focused on the waters of Pahang, was initiated by His Highness Tengku Hassanal Ibrahim Alam Shah. This led to a collaborative effort involving OceanXplorer Dalio Philanthropies, Universiti Malaysia Terengganu (UMT), International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM), and New York University Abu Dhabi. This groundbreaking 17-day scientific mission, running from 27 September to 13 October 2024, is dedicated to the exploration and assessment of Pahang’s marine ecosystems. The expedition, utilizing the state-of-the-art OceanXplorer research vessel, incorporates cutting-edge technologies such as DNA sequencing, multibeam sonar, remotely operated vehicles (ROVs), and environmental DNA (eDNA) studies. The key research objectives include evaluating coral reef health, understanding hydrographic dynamics, and identifying critical habitats for marine megafauna.

By integrating complex datasets such as microbial community profiles and comprehensive benthic mapping, the research team aims to generate significant insights that will inform marine conservation and sustainable management practices. The findings are expected to directly contribute to Malaysia’s marine conservation policies, particularly in relation to protecting vulnerable ecosystems. The mission also promotes ocean literacy among the public, emphasizing the importance of marine ecosystems to local livelihoods and fostering broader public engagement. The involvement of experts in coral reef ecology and marine conservation is essential to the success of this collaborative effort, enhancing international cooperation and advancing the field of marine science globally.

IIUM’s involvement in this expedition is spearheaded by the Advanced Coastal Research and Innovation IIUM (ACRIIIUM) Research Group (Coordinate by Dr. Muhammad Faiz Mohd Hanapiah) under the Kulliyyah of Science, with INOCEM researchers Dr. Mohd Fuad Miskon and Dr. Najatul Su Ad Abdullah, along with postgraduate student Br. Aiman Hisyam Azmi, playing key roles in the expedition. Their contributions are pivotal in driving IIUM’s research efforts in coral reef ecology and coastal ecosystem conservation.
