20 & 21 May 2024 – Glami Lemi, N9 – A collaborative effort between INOCEM lead by Asst. Prof. Dr. Mohd Firdaus Nawi and his assistant Ahmad Fadhil Ismail with Fisheries Research Institute (FRI) Glami Lemi has been initiated to establish a breeding program for the Malayan Mahseer (Tor tambroides a.k.a Kelah). This program aims to bolster the population of this iconic freshwater fish species, which faces threats from habitat degradation and overfishing. A pivotal discussion meeting was held to strategize joint research efforts, focusing on the species’ biology, habitat needs, and conservation measures. The discussions are paving the way for potential collaboration under a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) or Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) with the Department of Fisheries (DOF) Malaysia, aiming to formalize commitments and advance sustainable research and conservation initiatives for the Malayan Mahseer.
